Always wort explaining to others (https://xkcd.com/979/) with the same issue what the problem was.

I'm guessing that it needed quoting to save it from the ravages of shell expansion, or git ref/rev expansion.

@PhilipOakley - My issue turned out having nothing to do with the directory names or git for that matter. I didn't realize Matlab (the target platform) was open at the time, and it was putting a lock on these directories. So, indeed, git was unable to move the directories because they were locked.

Bottom Line: make sure no other application is interacting with the target directories.

It was rather too embarrassing of a mistake that I realized right after the initial submission so I tried to pull this issue... but anyway that's what happened.

@hokiedsp Thanks for the clarification.
I'd forgotten about the file locking issue, and that Matlab can do the Git version control (though only as a hack add-on in my opinion, but then ... it is better than nothing)
