Description
Pandas version checks
-
I have checked that this issue has not already been reported.
-
I have confirmed this bug exists on the latest version of pandas.
-
I have confirmed this bug exists on the main branch of pandas.
Reproducible Example
ser = pd.Series([1, 2], dtype="Int64")
ser[1] = "a"
This raises, while expanding casts to object
ser = pd.Series([1, 2], dtype="Int64")
ser[2] = "a"
Issue Description
Numpy dtypes are casting to object while ea dtypes raise. Was this a deliberate descision?
Expected Behavior
I would probably expect this to work.
