What versions of mysql support the --defaults-extra-file?
More so what version was it introduced? And what is the use case? Could you elaborate?

--defaults-extra-file present in docs since 5.0 http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysqldump.html#option_mysqldump_defaults-extra-file. I can't find confirmation for earlier versions quickly.
I faced the problem that mysql backup script can't find socket file. It was caused by mysql built from sources.
Temporary fix for that situation was rollback to 3.6.1 module.

I don't have any issues with this and I'm not too worried about the installations of version < 5.0.
