Ok, the doc build fails with matplotlib 3.3.1 - https://readthedocs.org/projects/xray/builds/11666181/ Lets pin it to 3.3.0 and see what happens. |

This looks like the same issue with 3.3.1: matplotlib/matplotlib#18254? Ran into this in MetPy as well. |

Yes we also get a ~/conda/envs/xarray_devel/lib/python3.7/site-packages/matplotlib/path.py in get_extents(self, transform, **kwargs)
601 xys.append(curve([0, *dzeros, 1]))
602 xys = np.concatenate(xys)

I realised that matplotlib is not listed in
ci/requirements/doc.ymlI think it is drawn as cartopy is required.But that's not the reason for this PR - matplotlib 3.3.1 came out 3 hours ago (https://anaconda.org/conda-forge/matplotlib) and I think this breaks the doc build. So let's test this.
