Overriding erase.pattern and bootloader.pattern in platform.txt leads to RunnerException when burning bootloader.

Using the third-party hardware folder in https://github.com/damellis/attiny/tree/lib-1.5-cores I get the following exception when doing "burn bootloader" from the IDE (against the branch lib-1.5-cores):

This is with the first "ATtiny" selected in the boards menu, the first "1 MHz (internal)" selected in the clock menu, and the first "ATtiny85" selected in the Processor menu. (See issue #1307.)

In the boards.txt you use a tool called "avrdude2", try to remove the trailing "2".
I've added a more clear error message for that

The error message helps, but I'm still having trouble. If I use "avrdude" as the tool, it seems like I get the standard command line, not the one in my platform.txt file. I also can't seem to use a different tool name, e.g. if I change the platform.txt keys to "avrdude2" (and include the basic ones like tools.avrdude2.cmd.path) I still get a tool not found error.

should be fixed now. You can refer a tool from another package with

attiny.bootloader.tool=arduino:avrdude

and still override part of the properties using your platform.txt
